This picture could connote fear due to the Chiaroscuro lighting created through low key lighting, producing contrasts between light and dark. This affect creates an uneasy atmosphere as vision is distorted due to the poor lighting, resulting in the formation of shadows. This could also connote fear due to the stereotype surrounding the shot type, long shots of dark hallways are typically associated with horror or thriller genres. This picture could connote purity, in a ironic way, social stigma depict this type of clothing as un-pure and sultry. But in reality the human body is the purist thing. This picture could connote danger as it's a warning for possible harm, the symbol on the sign is in red which is associated with danger and blood. The bold 'caution' also further makes you aware of the possible dangers surrounding this object, it makes you uneasy and weary about going near the area. This picture could connote strength, typically this word is associated with physical body strength but the brain in this image could connote mental strength, which is just as important. The lines projecting from the brain could further link with the idea of strength as it could be the energy in which the brain releases. This picture could connote loneliness, the image is of an area which should be lively, but its completely deserted except for one person sitting on a bench alone. This could connote that the person in the picture is lonely as well as the literal space and place. The bleak lighting and weather is attributed to the human emotion felt in this image, it creates a sense of sadness and isolation. This picture could connote friendship, the use of the body language and posture gives a sense of friendship and belonging. The arm around the other girls neck connotes closeness between the two people without seeing emotions through facial features.

I chose this short to be in my top 5 because of the comedic genre in the narrative, this keeps the audience engaged, it also has an element of British humour which makes it relatable. The use of the wide/long shot throughout the entire film creates the feeling of being a 3rd person in the room and gives a clear understanding of places and spaces. The use of the cuts at the beginning gives the audience knowledge of how the characters relationship used to be in contrast to what it was towards the end, this makes the narrative easier to understand. The use of the punch sound effect further adds to the comedic narrative, the way in which its made unrealistic makes it more entertaining for the audience. The soundtrack used links well with the narrative as its the same throughout, this works well with the idea that all the different cuts are different days/events within the relationship.

This short film has great spaces and places to fit the narrative, as well as costume to give the audience an understanding of who is the prisoner and who are the visitors, This makes the narrative easier to understand and adds to the aesthetics. The blue colour filter used create the dim mood and atmosphere of the protagonist which cases the audience to get a sense of the emotion that he would be feeling. The use of the close up on the characters hands show the anxiety around the situation, the female character is clearly losing connection with the inmate due to the loss of constant contact.

I chose this short film to be in my top 5 because of the use of the flawless camera pan, the entire film is shot in one take which adds a sense of realism. The use of the pan which goes around the table multiple times makes it feel as if you're involved with the action of the narrative and the continuity is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The dialogue used to tell the narrative of each character is realistic and the conversations between the 'family members' are relatable to any British family within the same class giving the short film good social context.

I chose this short film to be in my top 5 because of the way the narrative is told through the use of a voice-over, the script uses many metaphors to describe the life of the city, this technique adds creativity and mystery to the over all narrative. This means the audience has to pay close attention to the script to try and decode the meaning behind the story. The locations/spaces/places used in this short film add to the aesthetic, capturing the beauty of the city at night, the lighting from the buildings   and the natural ambience adds realism and makes the audience feel as if they are a third party within the diegesis.

Induction Task - Analysis

The narrative of our short film is quite straight forward in terms of story line, its a 'boy meets girl' narrative and the story concludes with a shared kiss. During post-production we decided that the narrative would work better as a comedic plot. During post-production, in result of not having enough footage we discovered a flaw in editing which caused continuity issues. Unfortunately we were not able to retake any shots due to time limits and not having the correct costumes on hand. To resolve this problem, we decided to include a fade instead of the cut which was previously used in the edit, making the overall continuity smoother. We also decreased the speed of the footage which worked well with the comedic narrative as well as resolving the continuity issue further. By making these changes it not only corrected the flaws within the film, but it also added aesthetics which linked with the story. We also experienced an issue with the framing of the tracking shot of 'J' walking to meet 'B', When the tracking shot comes to a still, the framing was slightly off centre causing 'B's leg to be somewhat out of shot. This was due to using a steady cam to get the desired shot, this meant holding the camera lower than eyesight view and whilst filming we were unable to watch the live footage. When we identified the mistake we tried re-taking the shot multiple times but because we didn't have previous experience with the equipment we were unable to get a perfect shot.
